Picture: “The Fools Who Dare To Dream” Painting By Lanechka Fevola
April the First is April Fools Day. It celebrates the Fool. To play the fool is a sign of silliness, when referenced thus, but it should not be so if the meaning of the Fool of old were understood and told. The Fool, was the Court Jester, the King or Queen’s confidential purveyor of wit and indeed, wisdom. Shakespeare knew this and showed us this in plays ranging from As You Like It, to King Lear. Sir Peter Ustinov, liked it, this metaphor, and himself played King Lear. His own play, The Love Of Four Colonels, featured his own performance as a fool.
April is a month that sees us aware, not only, as ever, of prejudice, and its origins, but of people and their origins. Sir Peter was born in April, and so was Igor Ustinov. We, the fools who believe in the actual betterment of humanity by means of artistry, are in a sense, the fools who dare to dream, to quote a song title from the late great, Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, a song that inspires the above painting by Lanechka Fevola, we, dream on, despite the hardships and travails, of such idealism, and the rejection that goes with so much of the attempt, whether in society in general, or in the creative world. Yes, we try in no small way, but in many ways, to make a better world. Here we below, link to another celebration of our ten years as a Forum. We re-post an article from before, that was for April Fools Day, as a part of the run up then, to the Peter Ustinov Centenary. We shall continue to keep you posted, in more ways than one…
