Painting: ” The Birthday,” By Lanechka Fevola
We should celebrate the 250th Birthday of America, mindful of it’s purpose, thoughtful about it’s promise , knowledgable as to its prejudice. America, even if depicting it as Columbia, Miss Columbia, Lady Columbia, the National Personification symbolised in cultural history, as a personification in one person, of many peoples and indeed many people, is not perfect. No place, as with no person, is. But we can pay her tribute and join in celebration of intentions, that were and are noble, preocupations that are often variable, and contradictions that are always palpable. I love America, as one who falls in love with an American, does. She is not an orange tinged President, indeed she is not a president at all. She is not one person, even if she is more appropriately a personification. She is bearing up well, yet, for her age, ageless, throughout the ages. She, like the human race, is a great and good and at times gargantuan, experiment. Happy Birthday to her.
