Never Forgetting

It is on Holocaust Memorial Day we remember those who perished as a result of the worst genocidal experience in human existence and history. We are exalted to never forget, as if any who were there, or any more who were not there, but know what it meant, could ever forget such evil.

But a Memorial Day needs to be more than a memory yet. It must be a realisation. The knowledge, the reality, is of peoples, individuals and in their millions, who were hated and targeted because of their ethnic origin and religious faith. In an era or society where originality and fidelity are not strong points, it is little wonder people are becoming ignorant and complacent. The Jewish people do not run the world. They are in increasing numbers the victims of antisemitism. And yet the Jewish people will not run away. They are in increasing numbers aware of  the dangers of antisemitism. We are all in this fight against prejudice. After thousands of years of that particular hatred, it is about time!
