The throne of Saint Peter is empty. Sir Peter Ustinov wrote a play called The Empty Chair. It was not about Popes, but about leaders none the less. A true leader has left us. Pope Francis was the essence of someone who made us aware of prejudice, and it being something we need to be against. From the very beginning of his period in office, he showed humility and humanity. Asked what he thought about gay relationships, “Who am I to judge?” became not merely words, but deeds. From not judging those who are gay, to washing the feet of convicted fellons, here was a compassionate man. Not without flaws, and not without critics, both within the Catholic Church and beyond, he was opposed and supported. He shall be missed.
